Movement practice is concerned with learning. Learning isn’t product oriented, but process oriented. A product is a thing, a process is a living thing. Product orientation is adding skills and knowledge to our repertoire in order to become closer to an ideal finished product. Process orientation requires harmonizing self with situation, and becoming aware of what is essential and what is non essential; it’s a meeting of both additive and subtractive forces. This refers not only to the skills that I shape, but also to the I that shapes the skills.

We engage in a variety of subjects. A product orientation is a quilt work of patching bits and pieces of subjects together in a linear fashion. A quilt can keep you warm, only if you produce your own heat. One must eat in order to produce heat. A process orientation is closer to eating. With each subject we will be chewing with our teeth and mixing our saliva into it, breaking down its nutritional content with our digestive system, reincorporating what we can back into ourselves and excreting what we can’t; through this process, we grow into a new creature that will now chew differently, digest differently, reincorporate and excrete differently.
